The waves at Monterey I saw in July, 2010 was what made me go back there three months later. There were about 40 of us on a private tour from San Francisco to Monterey, and almost everyone was from HK, a city surrounded by the sea, where from childhood we had seen waves big or small. But, nothing could compare to the waves we saw that day at that part of the rocky shore of Monterey - some came higher than a two-storey house, clashing against the huge rocks, loud and powerful, and one after another. Everyone was stunned at the breathtaking sight, but the guide wouldn't tell the driver to pull off at a parking spot for a quick photo stop. It was the biggest regret of the whole trip.
Many thanks to a new friend Tony G. I just met on that trip, who generously offered to drive me there again, if I booked a flight when he would be in town, which I did. On this trip, there was no high tide. Certain things in life will never be the same if you don't capture them at the right moment. However, I got to see Monterey at all the spots I wanted to stop, including the cute Point Pinos Lighthouse and the city of Carmel, and we even made it to Santa Cruz for the sunset. It was a very productive day. What I had missed was all made up by a kind and helpful friend.
This time I didn't repeat the 17 Miles Drive. I was there in July. Please see photos # 62 - 73 in https://pbase.com/denise_jtl/sf__bay_area_2010
